When I started this thread, I never thought for a minute that it was such an issue.....I can't believe the dealers aren't trying to flog it with every sale?! I love my Kombi but I've come to the conclusion that a large percentage of dealers/sales staff don't know the product they are selling! From memory, I'd read about it and asked the salesman about it.......it wasn't offered. In fairness, when I mentioned it, he knew all about it and was able to answer all my questions. What is it with VW that they treat their customers, almost with contempt.......you'd have thought they'd be bending over backwards right now?!
I don't think it is lack of dealer knowledge that stops them mentioning the service package or 5 year warranted,; it is the loss of future profit that stops them.
As i understand it, the VW dealers business model relates around the whole of the garages overhead being paid for by the service/spare parts department costs. And just the sales people costs being paid for from new vehicle sales; and the dealers profit coming from used vehicle sales. I was told this by a chap who used to own a VW franchise.
The big costs being the garage it's self rates/building rent/fit out/garage tools etc. When a garage refits the costs can be £1m+++++.
So the dealers financial model is damaged significantly by 2 years extra warrante, and the service package (4 services which could equal 8 years), i.e. you do not pay for any basic servicing until year 10.
Yes they get the few hundred quid upfront when you buy the package(s), but how much of that goes to VW UK? But the loss of future revenue is huge. A single failed electrical module, with diagnosis and vat can cost £500ish, that is a lot of lost income(profit) for the dealer. When the dealer does year 4-5 warrante work, I wonder what the hourly rate that VW pays the dealers for this work. The parts will be supplied by VW(UK), so no dealer margin there; and VW(UK) will probably pay the dealer against a fix price for work items, which equates to £30/hr v the £90/hr we would pay the dealer for the same work.
I think the reason that have these 2 packages, is to make them competitive against other brands, i.e. VW(UK) want the sale; but for a lot of us on this forum it is a VW van or go home; so VW(UK) already have our sale, but for a small fleet operator they may happily switch to Another brand over the service/warrantee packages.
So I think that is way these things are available, but not always mentioned; when we go into the garage most of the chat is about options and specs etc, when small fleet people go in, it is more about whole life costs, unexpected bills etc etc, and I would think these packages are mentioned early doors to these type of people.
