Where Have You Been In Your Van Today?

The local tip.

Whilst this might seem trivial compared to foreign adventures, for me it is a minor victory.

Our local tip has always banned commercial vehicles, going back several years I was never allowed to take my Caddy or my previous T6 in there despite both being privately registered, privately insured and clearly not used as a builders/tradesperson vehicle. I’ve also never taken my current T6 in there either.

Fast forward to last year when they introduced an online booking system and reduced the queuing outside in the process, and on several occasions since I have used the wife’s car to visit and have seen more than one van with windows in there - clearly a private vehicle/campervan/mobility wagon.

So I booked my van in for a slot today, rocked up expecting to be turned away or interrogated and have to argue and was just waved through.

It sounds like you're visiting Stalag 17 rather than a municipal tip. :(

In our area you have to register for a permit to take a van, even if it’s a Kombi or if you have a trailer (unless it’s a really small trailer)
Get 12 permits per year.

Anyone would think they're doing you a favour rather than providing a service you've already paid for.
Which is exactly why there’s loads of crap fly-tipped on the edge of my road up on the moors.
Ironically, you can report it and the council send a wagon round with 2 guys that collect it all up and presumably take it to the tip.
It defies logic.

You’ve no chance of getting to a skip anywhere around here in anything other than a car.
They are run by the nazi’s I’m sure.
My pal also a self employed joiner got stopped by the police and had his van checked. He told them he was taking the rubbish in the back to the skip after finishing a job.
They asked to see his license so he pulled out his drivers license and they said no. Your license to carry rubbish.
He supposedly had to have 2 different licenses to carry waste.
They done him.
So it’s ok for Mrs. Smith to stuff her car full of rubbish and take it to the skip but a professional tradesman in a sign written commercially insured company van can’t as it’s illegal?
WTF?
As pointed out no wonder there’s so much fly tipping.

Yes.

Being a professional and charging for services comes with the responsibility to keep up to date with the relevant regulations.

For example, I doubt the commercially insured van is insured for waste transfer.

No, but she isn’t carrying on a business doing waste transfer. She is driving around her own personal effects, and it becomes waste when she transfers it at the local tip.
Actually, yes. Transporting household rubbish is covered under the domestic section of SD&P.

Wow sounds like the old bill were jobs worth however thinking in his feet the “waste” isn’t actually waste - it’s materials for another job . One man’s waste is another man’s treasure
