AdBlue Discussion and Issues

Topped up Adblue for the first time today. £10.99 for 10 litres from Euro Car Parts, including a spout on the container. Five minutes to top up, no mess, no dramas. Switched ignition back on , within about 10 seconds, the Adblue range was updated to 5K miles. Prior to top up, the Adblue range was down to 900 miles. From this thread, it looks like however much you top up over 5k miles, the max range only shows 5k miles.

I saw 10500 km (=6500 miles). Stayed at that about 900 km, two weeks. Then down to 10000 km - stayed there about 1200 km. Etc.
Since the fill-up driven now 13000 km and remaining AdBlue range still 4500 km :D.

Out of interest how much did it say you should put in? Against the 10 litres. When I was on the 600m countdown I couldn't get 10 litres in.

Hi bought a 2017 VW T6 - T32 Kombi, it has already had to have the adblue pump replaced. Just got it back from the dealer and the dashboard is showing the Adblue notifications again. the owners manual says the clear tipping bottle means refill. So I have this icon, and it says 5000. It does not have a minimum or a maximum amount it just has this bottle and 5000... And it keeps popping up when driving even when I dismiss it. What is going on? I called the dealership and told them I am going to add more adblue (assuming they didnt top it up after replacing the pump) and they left me a message saying the dashboard alert is normal, and not to put anymore adblue in.. But its too late.. now my dash says adblue 6500.

Is this going to ruin my vehicle?

This van has been a royal pain, already had two efr flushes, they replaced a efr/emmissions pipe, battery was nearly dead - they said VW sells all of their new vehicles with these awful batteries and they constantly have to replace them with a different brand and that is why my START STOP was/is behaving so oddly. Seatbelt broke out of the blue too..

Any way -what should I do about potential overfilling? I dont want to tell the dealer they will use it against us.

You can't overfill the tank, it just runs out on the floor when full, I just prop a 20 litre container up on a stool with the nozzle in the filler and wait until it fills up

Thats good to hear as i read somewhere it would corrode the tank.. and the dealer sounded a bit panicky..

Bad advise and the cause of others' issues, you can overfill it, there must be an airgap in the main part of the tank.
You have just been lucky so far with your Russian roulette.

That is why there is a min and max amount on the display.
Based on VW advise to their master techs...

Your van, you do what you like, but don't advise others!

If it looks like this;

Then this is not a warning, it is just the adblue range in the MFD, you can use the buttons to swap it to something else.

when it eventually looks like this;

then you can add a min of 1.25gals up to a maximum of 2 gals.

Gallons? Is the 19th century ? lol . I run mine as part of a commercial fleet , people talk all sorts of cobblers and myths. When it reaches the top it spills out, simple as ! How can ad blu damage paint? If someone was to pee on your paintwork it would be more corrosive

Over filling past the recommended on the MFD, has led to some on the forum having problems re: the sensors not picking up that it has been topped up. This could then lead to the van thinking that it has not got sufficient ad blue, thus leading to the van refusing to start.

we're not talking about paint. But the AdBlue sensor throwing a wobbly and leaving you stranded when the van won't start.

you can have it in litres if you switch the unit from miles to KMs.

From VW Master tech:
Adblue is a different issue on the dash the vehicle will display how much AdBlue it requires either in litres or gallons depending on your country setting but this can be changed by the user. The AdBlue level is worked out by an ultrasonic sensor, the problem with this is if you overfill the AdBlue then the tank thinks it’s empty and the system shuts down. The AdBlue tank on your vehicle holds 13 litres if it is a case that the tank has been overfilled then this is not covered by warranty. The system has to be drained and reset then refilled. I would always advise too that if you are filling using a bottle then look on the dash to see how much it needs and pour in 1/2 a litre less than it asks for. If you fill the tank up and it comes up out of the filler neck then it’s overfull and the system may shut down.

I always fill mine up to overflowing on my VW's and Ford's for years and have never had a problem so your "master tech " is talking cobblers
