New Transporter - first official pic

Interesting, I'd always perceived the Ford as a taller and wider van but there is not much in it really.
I’ve always seen the transit as lower and wider. The width being the most noticeable and something that is a carry over from the first Transit so it could fit an 8x4 sheet between the wheel arches I believe.
The Transporter does feel skinny when driving - nice for country lanes, especially with the practically vertical sides. As for parking spaces even Polos struggle to fit them here in the UK where we haven’t moved on for decades and cramming more in is far better than actually letting people open their doors.

The size of parking spaces has remined constant (I believe); the average vehicle size has increased significantly; and the size of new-build home garages has shrunk dramatically. Still... at least local and national politicians don't treat motorists as a cash cows!

That press launch picture is a laugh. Talk about being clever VW are distorting the actual vehicle images until the very last moment. That way they get maximum pre orders before it it comes to the market

It's funny seeing all the "I don't like this, I don't like that" comments. If it was a VW original you'd all be saying the same. What do you want? A 20 year old T5?

Agreed, especially when such comments come from people (like me) who have no intention of purchasing the new Transporter, but it wouldn't be much of a forum without the exchange of views, opinion and comment, would it?

It's a fair point and every change goes through this "rejection" and "acceptance" cycle - I think the issue here is that the long drawn out teasing of the VW version when the Ford version is already well publicised means it's harder at the minute to see the good things.

It's also the first time in Transporter history where we can compare it to a close to identical van - and there are legitimate concerns that with the likely VW price point just what are you going to get extra - if it's just styling that might be rather underwhelming hence the negativity.

The longer this teasing phase goes on the more VW risk the conclusion that the only reason is because actually there isn't much difference between the two.

I don't think it's because folks are against change but, for the first time, the questions can be asked "why not just buy the cheaper version of the same thing from someone else"?

You can have just the same experiences in a 20 year old van, it’s just a case of maintaining it.
There are plenty of new vans sat on driveways not being used and plenty of well used bangers giving their owners endless fun.

Ha ha maybe! The facts are out there. Transit sales have always being huge and VW as a global business will have invested billions of to make the Ford joint venture a success. As loyal brand customers we have no say in the how international enterprises shape the market. Until I see the new Transporter in the flesh I’ll will reserve judgement

I wonder how new transporter will sit. I wouldn't be convinced if the transit custom is anything to go by... Seems like a lot of electrical wizardy exposed... And could lose a small kid in the wheel gap!

See what you mean about the gap between tyre and wing although I have original springs and 16” wheels on the Transporter and the gap is massive - doesn’t bother me. The ride quality does though (seems rubbish whatever you do).
As for the cable connectors sadly that’s not just a Ford thing either. Remember normal transporters don’t come with a belly pan and the grille is open so we see lots of fairly exposed connectors already. The abs wiring is also held together with a wing a mod a prayer on transporters with twisted joints known to corrode.
Not excusing the Ford/VW connectors you pictured but the industry in general seems to just rely on waterproof connectors being just that (or not even waterproof connectors in VWs abs case) - again showing the beam counters are in charge everywhere and they don’t follow common sense… just pound signs.

£500 a month for a Transit?! I haven’t leased for about 10 years, but you used to be able to get a Q7 for that money, I had a Touareg R-Line for £365 a month.

I'd second @Lubrown on the wiring on current models. Mines an allegedly premium 3 year old T6.1 Caravelle and what I see in the engine bay is underwhelming. Given the day job some of the cable support is... not good. And the habit of just having some copex ending and then a thin wire under tension to a critical sensor... Ugh.

The other end of the drive is an 18 year old XC70 that had it's first ABS sensor replacement last month at 250k and the only electrical problem it's ever had is the backlighting to the radio buttons.

Different worlds. One's allegedly better for the environment but seems built to be thrown away.
