Regen - completes after engine shut down?

Sometimes when I switch off the van, it's blatently obvious when it's doing a regen. Radiator fan sounds like a plague of a thousand locust trying to escape your underpants.

However, from time to time, there's just a quiet whining noise and a faint roar of what sounds like fuel being burned in some kind of burner. Only lasts a couple of minutes then fades away.

Can the regen process run without the under bonnet Chinook kicking in. Anyone else noticed the quiet noise?

Yes your van will regen whilst driving ,
The revs may go up a bit and slight uneven running.
The only reason the fans come on is because the regen hasn't finished ,so they come on to blow air and keep it cool
Mine tends to do a regeneration when I have re fuelled

Are you not getting confused with the coolant heater? It makes a sound like you describe. I believe it only runs below a certain temperature (6c?) and may not be standard on all my vans, but definitely exists on my Cali Beach

Thanks @CaliStu. I was wondering about this too and wondered if I have a coolant heater fitted that I just dont know about. I have an additional heater unit in the back but assumed it's just running on circulated engine coolant thats warmed by the cylinders. Definitely sounds and smells like diesel being burnt. Is there a way to tell looking under the bonnet if you have this auxiliary heater?

Not sure about under the bonnet, but I believe it's visible from underneath the van. Also I think there should be a sticker (webasto?) on the inside of the drivers door. I've got two stickers, webasto for the coolant heater and eberspacher for the parking heater.

If you have a webasto auxiliary heater ,they sometimes run on a bit after switch off ,I think it runs till its cool .
If you have one it is under the floor below passenger seat .

The cooling fan that starts up if you stop whilst it's doing a regen or just after is heat dependent - it runs full when hot and slows down as the temp drops. If the van was turned off a minute or so after a regen the fan will only start on a low setting and stop pretty quick.

Thats certainly where the noise comes from. Noticed this on a Carista diagnostic check I did. I thought 'auxiliary heater' ment my rear cabin heater, as in just another water matrix to heat the back passenger area. I'll crawl under the van in the morning for a proper look.

You can only regen with the engine running. As soon as you turn engine off during a regen the fans run to keep airflow across the dpf. The flowing water sound you hear with engine off is the coolant lines.

Seems like the noise is an auxiliary heater after all. Never knew I had one until this morning. Every days a school day. Now to see if adapting it into a remotely operated parking heater is a viable option.:geek:

I have just done mine ,I have a remote to turn it on ,you can also have a timer or use your mobile phone .
Kit is about £540 ,there are two types one for climate and one for climatronic

Thanks @carlg. Found and had a read of the thread you and a few others joined you on about this adaptation. I'm planning by this time next year, to have a Wallas Duo XC diesel heater/cooker combo fitted. Given it's already a 1500 quid investment, I wonder if a GSM switch connected to that instead would be the more sensible and cost effective route for me to take.

I frequently do Oh my god o'clock starts in the morning so having the van warmed up, by sending a text 20 minutes prior to me getting in it, is quite appealing.

@Dieseldonkey ,if you were to go a head I have the flashtool which I no longer need and would sell on .

Hi all ,
Just got the new van , 150 lwb . Only managed to put 60 miles on it so far due to work .
On driving for approx. 4 miles into work & shutting off , radiator fan ? sounds like it is running , temp on gauge fine.
Also , stop start doesn't seem to work - I will most likely switch it off on dash anyway , but should work on short journey ?
Thanks

Start stop won't work with the heater blowers on

Fan running means welcome to the world of re-gens

Both entirely normal:thumbsup:

Ok , thanks !
Re-gens after 60 miles !!! Never had a regen on my t5.1 in 60 000 miles ! The 60 miles have all been stop start and mostly town , but even though !

Its also new and I had this for the first few hundred miles.
