I would choose AGM over EFB any day.

EFB are just an attempt at getting AGM like performance at a cheaper cost.

AGMs have a higher rest voltage too. .. (which is good)

VW fitted me a VARTA AGM starter battery and a EFB Leisure battery . . . why? well the leisure battery had to be EFB or AGM as the factory spit charge relay just connected the batteries together . .

So EFB for the rapid higher charge rate due to stop / start . . . but cheaper than the AGM equivalent.

see the testing:

Strange. I ordered my 2017 T6 150 ps TSI with the optional Eberspacher heater. So, the leisure battery is also installed from factory. This is an AGM type. The starter battery is an EFB ( because it is locatad in a hot environment under the bonnet). That´s the opposite of the configuration your dealer is installing.
( I prefer the VW factory presciptions ).

I would choose AGM over EFB any day.

Agreed, EFBs have been considered by anyone in the industry to be a poor mans AGM.

My factory EFB has been on its last legs for 18 months (if i did a few small trips or parked up and the engine fan carried on running as i left the van, there was a good chance it would have enough left in it to crank it enough to start!) I had planned to wait until the warranty was close to running out then getting a swap from VW...however COVID closed down the dealerships around when the warranty was ending, which would have made getting an appointment tricky and well, I also couldn't be arsed with the booking an appointment, waiting...getting 'the man' to tell me what i already knew, waiting for parts and booking another apointment...so i just picked one up an 019 AGM from Tayna, VCDS'ed it in and its working well.

yep, odd. . . . . .

mines all factory fit.

when i went to the dealer for the failed MOL EFB leisure battery i asked for a AGM replacement.

They said they couldn't as the factory would only offer "like for like" warranty replacements. . . . and the AGM was more expensive.

heres a nice video from VARTA about the AGM & EFB battery tech . . (subtitled)

They say, if you have an EFB then you can "upgrade" to an AGM . . . . But if already have an AGM then replace it with AGM "dont step back to EFB".

so the word is . . . if you have the choice and the cash . . . . fit AGM.

I'll second/third that, I'd class AGM as an upgrade to EFB, just looking at the relative prices of the two types, like for like, rarely will you pay more for an inferior product

..... and so a pure tecnical discussion of AGM versus EFB becomes a ££ discussion. Then I propose to wait until the Brexit starts and import taxes has to be paid.....

I'll try to explain what I mean ;)

It's the same as asking why 98 octane gasoline is more expensive than 95 octane gasoline.
All depends what are the technical needs?

If your engine needs 95 (low compression ratio) you may put also 98 (high compression ratio)
in the tank and it will run fine. Vice versa is not recommended.

If your engine needs an EFB (start/stop & warm environment) you may put also an AGM (several electrical consumers in the camper)
and all will work fine. Vice versa is not recommended.

And of course, in these 2 cases you can always choose the most expensive one............:giggle:.

(So far my comparison with the Brexit :sneaky: )

Hi,

Looking at replacing my Battery - I posted a thread a few weeks re I was Camping - Van had been left a couple of days - battery was totally dead when trying to start. Consensus was as it's nearly 5 years old, with constant door opening etc - i.e. powering modules etc it was probably a little too much for the age of the battery, thus replacement needed.

Current battery is Varta - 68Ah, 380 A DIN, 680A EN/SAE/GS. As always a myriad of options. Halford have two options that seem on a par/exceed at a good price, I just wanted thoughts re suitability etc please.

Yuasa HSB013 - 65Ah, 640A. Size 24.2 x 17.5 x 19. Price £112
Yuasa HSB110 - 85Ah, 800A. Size 31.5 x 17.5 x 17.5. Price £117

The HSB013 is slightly down to the Varta, assume not a material difference?
The HSB110 is only £5 more but would be considerably up to the Varya, however looks like it would be a very tight fit, if fit at all - I'm no expert so wondered if those in the know could confirm it would fit?

I have checked the following thread, there's a brief mention on the Yuasa - no real objections from what I can see:

Thanks in advance.

It's not clear to me that those batteries are start/stop compatible? All T6's (possibly with the exception of some very early models) need a start/stop compatible battery, usually an AGM type, although later models are supplied with EFB batteries as a slightly cheaper option.

Yep - I've referenced this in my post, was after thought's re suitability - whilst spec's might be OK real life experiences can be different, hence the query

The Yuasa HSB013 - buried in the blurb is "Halfords Stop/Start batteries..."

However, no mention of this for the Yuasa HSB110 - that's the higher spec one so was looking to get this, though still unsure if it will fit.

Thanks

Yeah, it's not obvious. I can't find any mention (other than that random bit of Halfords text which might well be a mistake) that implies that these are start/stop compatible so I would assume they're not. Yuasa explicitly list AGM/EFB battery ranges separately here and explicitly state they are start/stop compatible, which they don't do for the batteries you've listed so, again, I would assume they are not start/stop compatible. I would find an explicitly identified start/stop AGM or EFB battery to be safe.

So I reckon I need a new starter battery. Anyone clocked any good deals?
It’s a T6 150 DSG Bluemotion with stop/start.

Thanks in advance

Have a look here.....

Evening all!
I'm thinking my starter battery is on the way out but want to be sure before I go any further...so I think most of the indicators are there.... apart from it starts fine!
Noticed randomly a few months back when we were away and parked up for the night the CBE control panel beeped and warned me the starter battery showed a lower than normal voltage (Normal 12.5V?)but cant remember what that was although under 12v i'm pretty sure. Only did it the once and we were driving out most days. Not a daily driver and been parked up a week or so now. Decided to put the starter battery on charge this afternoon with my Ctek...then noticed later this evening the Ctek was very warm and had been on 3/4 charge for quite a long while, and the Sterling Power charger in the back was warm with the fan operating and some of the little LED lights are lit up.
Its all been professionally fitted and wired up and been perfect in every other way.
Your knowledge and wisdom are appreciated, as always. Thanks guys.IMG_4827.jpegIMG_4824.jpegIMG_4826.jpeg

Does your van have a Bluemotion smart alternator?
