Hello there did you fix your steering problem I’ve had the same on mine since I bought it.
I’ve put all new tie rod ends track rod ends reconditioned steering rack literally everything is like new under the van and they’re still bloody play in the steering rack most garages can’t work out what it is so I did the homework myself.
I’ve checked the steering column which there is no play. and I come to realise there is another u join under the van .. rack to column u jont
It’s going in the garage next week to be fitted hopefully this is it I’ll give you an update

Hi All, I am trying to resolve the same problem I think. Around centre the steering feels very vague, which at motorway speed feels scary. 2016 California. Have replaced suspension with Komfort B14, and the rake is now good. Whilst I was there have replaced strut top mounts, track rod ends, drop links, H&R arb. 4 wheel alignment done as well.
Drives great except for the numb feeling around centre.
Next step is polybushes for the steering rack, adjust the preload? And possibly the intermediate shaft if the UJ has a rubber connector.
Anyone else gone this far? I just can’t believe this was how VW intended this to feel.

I would be interested if you get to the bottom of it, adding rear t32 spring to sort the rake angle help me but still got play. Not sure what to change to sort it and the guy at the garage said it normal to have a little play.. I’m not convinced
Cheers

I have replaced the intermediate shaft for a brand new one, took it for a 5 mile drive, i think it might be better but not night and day better. the rack mounts look like a mission to replace as one of the engine mounts bridges the rack so would have to remove this to lift the rack, so these are still to do.
i have tightened the preload nut by around 25 degrees, i think i might go another 10 degrees as it feels tighter, but i could cope with more. i prefer the old school heavy steering as opposed to the new finger light steering feel.
not sure what else to do now, maybe this is how VW made them? but i drive ford & renault equivalents all the time, and loaded up as well, we sell and fit tiles. big vans have driven like cars for the past 15 years now, so i can't believe VW are so far behind.

Interesting since I sorted the rake angle the play in the steering on my van is alot more noticeable. Feels like a good 5-10 degrees of play. Also noted you state the steering it light. Mine is pretty heavy, wonder if my rack is on its way out.

Is the intermediate shaft the linkage between the rack and the steering shaft?

Thanks for the feedback on your issue

Cheers
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

the intermediate shaft is the part that joins on the steering rack and then to the bottom of the column (just above floor level under the pedals)

Perfect thanks, don’t suppose you know where I can purchase one from? Also how much you were charged as a general ball park figure something to gauge quotes of.
Thanks for the reply

it was quite hard to find, but i got it from 'VW van parts direct' £238
from catcar info i got the part number 7E2419751B,
this is the link to the part i bought Van Parts Direct VW Transporter 2010 - 2019 Intermediate Steering Shaft ( Item In Yellow )- Genuine VW Commercial Parts
part number was 7E2419751C, looked identical to the part i took off.
only thing to note is it didn't come with the bottom oetiker 51.5mm clamp for the boot, but i managed to get one from ebay for a couple of quid.

Thanks so much , this is great. Will pick one up and see if I can get it fitted.
Best Daniel

Fitted it myself, pretty straight forward.
There is a workshop manual on here somewhere which shows how to deal with the eccentric bolts. You will need new nylock nuts and the metal oetiker band that secures the bottom of the boot. Hardest part was getting the carpet out from under the pedals!

Thanks that’s awesome, fingers crossed this is my issue,

Thanks

Hi all. I have recently bought my first T6 and I think I am experiencing the same issue. The van is a 2018 model with only 21k.
The free play on the steering wheel is roughly 15mm before movement of the wheels. But strangely once the slack, or backlash or whatever the correct term is, is taken up on by the steering wheel the drive wheels move nearly instantly with the slightest movement of the steering wheel. At this point of test the you can hear the power steering pump work a bit harder than when the steering wheel is in a relaxed position.
The van is a pig to drive with a vague feel to the steering, but I’m hopeful this this now how VW intended it to be like. My dealer replaced a track rod end and has basically written me off. I have 2 months warranty left on a 24k purchase so I’m getting nervous. My research is leading me towards the component between the rack and the steering column. Has anyone got any thoughts or updates. Many thanks

Yes the connection part as you described can be the issue from what I have researched , however I have been to 2 specialists and both have stated that the play is “normal” .. annoys the heck outta me and will look to replace that part at some point to see if I can correct it, but not holding my breath on this one.. seems like it might just be a feature sadly
