Steering Wheel Play.

Thanks for your reply digriff. Its a bloody annoying feature. I am not going to waste any time chasing this a warranty issue. But in time I will look at replacing this part. My guess it’s been like it since new. Surely not every T6 has this gremlin of a feature

I’ll let you know in a few weeks how I get on
Would be great to find out how you get on with it. Yeah I am surprised at the amount of issues the T6 has. Only had my van for 1.5yr driven 8k since getting it and had to spend 2.5k on issues so far.. engine crank seal is an expensive piece to replace from a reallly flawed vw design error. Adblue system.. yeah total pain.. anyway love my van regardless will keep patching as I go

it was quite hard to find, but i got it from 'VW van parts direct' £238
from catcar info i got the part number 7E2419751B,
this is the link to the part i bought Van Parts Direct VW Transporter 2010 - 2019 Intermediate Steering Shaft ( Item In Yellow )- Genuine VW Commercial Parts
part number was 7E2419751C, looked identical to the part i took off.
only thing to note is it didn't come with the bottom oetiker 51.5mm clamp for the boot, but i managed to get one from ebay for a couple of quid.
Hi. I am having the same issue. I have a 2018 California 204bhp. Do you know if this is the same part number. Thanks.

Thanks for the update chrisab. Just out of interest how many miles has your van covered. Mine only shows 30k with the slack steering issue. I’m beginning to think many of these T6s have had this issue from new.

Hi. I bought it with 65k on. I just put it down to being a California and has had all that weight in the back from day 1. I up rated the rear springs to level the van before I changed the intermediate shaft, it was slightly better but not by much.

Can anyone confirm changing the intermediate steering shift fixes this play in the steering and is it a difficult job to change?
Thanks in advance.
Rob

Your asking a lot. No one can properly answer that as there are a few components that can cause free play. Intermediate shaft, steering rack, inner track rod joints and track rod ends.

I know my own vans steering play is the actual rack and not the intermediate shaft. My gut instinct is it will be the rack that has the play. We don't get many transporters coming in, but most have play in the steering. When checked, they have all been in the rack.

Not a very scientific answer for you, but I'm putting my money on the rack at fault!

Fair comment :)
Thanks for your help!

No movement in anything else, so I had the rack replaced......... and the movement is still there..
Seems to be a feature on the t6 which is really annoying?
How many other people have free play in the steering like this? Around 10-15mm free play
The local garage really know there stuff and say its normal, but I can't believe VW would design something this bad?

I've got play. But it doesn't seem to affect driving, it does feel weird. But then the power steering of the T6 is extremely light with no feeling compared to my Toyota Rav4.

Thankyou for the reply, can I ask what it feels like at motorway speeds please?

Well, I drove my van all the way back from South Wales to the Midlands on many motorways and didn't feel like there was anything wrong. I didn't notice the play until much later and then looked up if was an issue on here.

Thank you....mine feels very vague at 65-70mph...its not a nice feeling at all

Can anyone else feel free play in their steering?
Yes, mine does the same as yours. And yes, at motorway speeds it feels a little strange. It's not dangerous or anything, just a little annoying.

There are 2 T5s at my work just now, both have freeplay. Both have been checked and it's in the rack. The other vans we have had in all have had play with the exception of one.

One day mine will be treated to a nice new rack, but after spending a few pounds replacing the whole fuel system, it's not getting anything spent on it any time soon!

Thanks for the reply. Just had a new rack fitted, still the same freeplay. Seems to be a T6 feature and more common that i thought..

......anyone else have the same issue?
