VW closes T6.1 order book today (3/3/23) !!!! - T7 Next? or T8?

Don't hold your breath!!!
In my experience over the years, having owned several (in fact many) of both brands, customer service is the same in terms of human interaction. VW have better free drinks. Ford break far fewer parts when ‘servicing’ your car or renewing brakes etc.

It will be interesting to see ( when the VW version is on sale ) how the two vehicles stack up against each other price wise. Say the VW you want is a grand more, how many current VW owners will be willing to pay the extra, given they are now pretty much identical.
Agree it will be interesting.

When looking for our last car we were keen on another Golf but the lower prices of Skoda Octavia’s couldn’t be ignored.

However, if you spec a Skoda Octavia to include the stuff VW included on the Golf then you end up paying more in total due to all the optional extras.
Guess that’s why golf’s are still really popular in the UK.

The other question on my mind is how many folk will stick a VW front end on a Transit - as we already see happening with Transporters to update the looks?

I don’t think of the vw/ford link up in the same way as the vag group cars. It used to be that Skoda/seat used older vw/audi kit in their cars as the tech was handed down, I don’t think it’s quite the same these days so I think these brands are even closer these days. The new transporter will probably be just a ford with a vw badge and a vw infotainment system

Well, yes, that's exactly what it is. A Transit with a VW badge. Why would anyone pay a premium? or wait 18 months extra to order one?

It's a 12month wait for the new Transits and Ford have stopped orders on the DCIV models due to volume.
VWs version will be an even longer wait as they are on the same production line.
been waiting 7 months for my MSRT EV panel van and still no build date.

How about this.....the 2.5 phev is Mazdas engine. So a VW with a Mazda engine but is a Ford underneath.

Why not the Phev engine from the new T7 multivan? It's no rocket ship, but it's perfectly fine in that vehicle.

Simply because the VW hybrid is designed for the MQB platform. Battery pack sits in a certain place etc etc
Wouldnt suit a commercial setup to maximise cargo space without changing the platform and this is a Ford developed platform to suit diesel, phev and ev all at once.

Plenty of folk paid a premium for a Renault pick up truck with a Merdedes badge on it.

I can recall BITD people would actually pay more for the Toyota Aygo over the Citroën C1 or Peugeot 107 because it was perceived Toyota was a more reliable brand, despite all three plopping off the same produdtion line. The irony there is that the restyling job Toyota did made them prone to horrible cabin water leaks that could affect the electrics so were actually rather less reliable than it's sisters, but that didn't stop folk continuing to buy them for the name.

So sensible folk such as you or I wouldn't pay a premium (and doubtless higher insurance too) for the same vehicle with a minor restyle job but there are plenty of folk out there who gladly will and VW are happy to relieve them of their cash.

My experience of platform sharing was the other way round.
I bought a new Peugeot Partner which was a lovely plush van. Replaced it with a Citroen Berlingo 5 years later for the same price the Partner cost, which was really cheap and nasty. Engine had been throttled to within an inch of it's life to meet emissions. Had a few warranty claims with the final straw being a snapped camshaft at 33k.
Sold it with 3 months warranty left and started a 12 year, trouble free period with Caddy's.

That's not just platform sharing - they're coming off the same line with 98% common parts. They are the same vehicle, with different cosmetic accoutrements attached in batches.

A later partner from the same model years as your Berlingo would have been much the same. Both had suffered from cost control and ever tighter emissions regs as time progressed. My Brother arranged the finance for the production line where they're made.

TBF though, the VW-badged version will probably be easier to move on for the exact same reasons.

Well it was kind of inevitable at some stage I suppose!!

Guess what my van is being 'treated to' at next service! Always something!

Edit. Van going in on Monday where they will advise. 2018 with 55000 miles. For the belt to be changed is £1500+vat. Decisions decisions....

I had mine done at Listers Van Centre last year for £790 including water pump, VAT and 2 year warranty.

I'm sure you are correct on that! ;)
The Partner was the first of the Postman Pat van's, designed as a van with height and wheels in the corners.
A breath of fresh air after the Escort, Astra, Sunny and Chevette based vans.
As I said, the price never went up from 97 to 2004 when I got the Berlingo .... but the quality went down.

I remember paying 8 grand including VAT for it, and paying with a debit card.

The VAT on my 6.1 is 8 grand, made 5 hefty payments so far and not paid off half the VAT yet. :(

That sounds more like it @PlanB heard that it was advisable to do the water pump at same time! Still cheaper than an engine!

That’s when some folk will stick a VW grille and badges on their Transits (we see the same sort of thing already with people sticking new front ends on their transporters to make it look like a newer version).
Or totally debadge it and stick Leighton Vans body kit/bumpers on it and add £30k just like that ;)
